Italian Commedia dell’arte is a form of Italian theatre which came about in the 16th century. Comic servants or ‘Zanni’ would perform funny skits for their audience wearing a mask with a rather large nose. It was considered the larger the nose, the sillier the performer. ‘Harlequin’ (Arlecchino in Italian) was perhaps one of the most popular characters. He would often wear a bright patchwork suit. He was extremely acrobatic and wowed his audience with these skills.
